Internet Saathi To Empower Women In Odisha

‘Internet Saathi’, a digital literacy joint-initiative of Google India and Tata Trusts, aimed at empowering women in rural India, reaches 2.6 lakh villages across 20 states. Odisha has now been included in the programme which will educate the rural women in the state on ‘how to use the internet’. A total of 16,000 villages in Odisha will be covered in the ‘Internet Saathi’ drive.

“About 70 per cent of Internet Saathi’s believe they are seen as a source of information in their village — people are coming to them consistently for answers to help children with schoolwork, to learn new cooking recipes, search for jobs, or to run a business,” stated the findings of a recent Google study (with Kantar) where 2,500 people across rural India were interviewed.

Over a period of four years, 70,000 trained ‘Internet Saathi’s’ have been successfully empowered and are using the Internet to drive positive change in their communities, benefitting over 2.6 crore fellow women. Women entrepreneurship has been established through this initiative helping several as it has helped many to set up their micro-businesses like stitching, honey bee farming and beauty parlour, while many others are empowering their families and communities with new skills to enhance the scopes of their livelihoods.
