Government Identifies 13 Hospitals As Organ Harvesting Centres

The Odisha government has identified 13 hospitals as organ harvesting centers where organs from brain dead persons are transplanted to the needy. This initiative will benefit a lot of persons, setting a benchmark in cadaveric organ transplants. The Directorate of medical education and training has designated seven hospitals for kidney and eyes, and eight others for the harvesting of eyes only.

“This was the last of the series of steps needed to harvest organs from brain dead persons as per the provisions of the Transplant of Human Organs Act, 1994”, a senior government official said. With all these provisions in the state, a cadaver transplant can take place as soon as there is a brain dead patient and a willing acceptor.

The office of the Odisha State Organ and Transplant Organization (SOTTO) – responsible for the supervision of the cadaver transplant – is ready and functioning from the SCB Medical College and Hospital.

As the state is not yet ready to transplant organs other than kidney and cornea, the SOTTO will coordinate with the Regional Organ and Transplant Organization Kolkata for transplant of other organs such as heart, lungs, liver, and pancreas from brain dead people.
