It was an unusually cheerful day at the Naval Tata Hockey Academy in Bhubaneswar. The practice session was special for more than one reason.

Indian Hockey legends – Dhanraj Pillay along with ace drag-flicker Len Aiyappa and Dilip Tirkey visited the academy and interacted with the girl cadets.

The discussion ranged from hockey to life lessons from Dhanraj Pillay and a quick chance to practice with the legend.

Known to speak his mind, Dhanraj’s first advice was to focus on self rather than indulging in comparison.

“Never compare yourself with another, on any aspect. Only aim to better oneself at the game. Those times were different. Today, the turfs are equipped for better results. Follow the coach, learn the tricks, and constantly strive to better one’s skill. Watch and learn from seniors in the national teams. You all have it in you too. Sky’s the limit and you should persevere to be an international player and make your parents and coach proud.”

Dhanraj Pillay even took to the turf, displaying his magical skills as the cadets looked in awe of the former hockey star.

A young cadet Sumi Mundari, who got to interact could barely hide her excitement.

“We had only seen him on TV. Today, we trained with him on the turf. It is like a dream come true. It is a moment of pride for all of us here. He is very inspiring and someday, we hope to make it big.”

One of India’s most successful drag-flickers Len Aiyappa also shared some pro-tips with the young girls. Appreciating the infrastructure in the state, Aiyappa praised the State Government for their work in the field of hockey.

“I commend the Odisha government for giving youngsters the opportunity and facilities here, besides hosting all international tournaments here. With all the facilities and a beautiful turf, the cadets are fortunate to be training at the Naval Tata Hockey Academy Odisha. They will have a bright future.”

Former captain of the India team, Dilip Tirkey was also present at the Kalinga Stadium.
