Odisha Leading The Race To Host Asian Rowing Championships

According to sources, Odisha is one of the destinations being considered by the Rowing Federation of India (RFI) to host the Asian Rowing Championships 2020. The State has already showcased its high standards in hosting international sporting events of late, which includes the recently concluded Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in Cuttack.

And if word is to be believed, the state will host the Asian Rowing Championships in October or November next year. The Army Rowing Node facility in Pune is also considered as an option by the, in case it can’t be staged in Odisha.

“India last hosted the competition in Hyderabad in 2005. It has been almost 14 years and if we are to be recognised as a powerhouse in Asia, we have to host more such competitions,” said RFI president Rajlaxmi Singh Deo. “Pune has excellent facilities as well. But we want to take it to a new state this time,” she added. She also confirmed that talks are ongoing with the Odisha government and a formal confirmation is being awaited before proceeding on the planning of the event.

Odisha’s commissioner-cum-secretary for sports and tourism, Vishal Kumar Dev also confirmed that the RFI is in talks with the Odisha government. “Indian rowers have been doing well recently and we will be happy to host the event subject to a mutual agreement,” he said.

Jagatpur near Cuttack is being considered for hosting the event because it is surrounded by the Mahanadi and its tributaries, making it the ideal spot for the sport. The Asian Rowing Federation has given prospective hosts time till July 31 to confirm their interest in hosting the tournament.
