Hockey Fraternity Voices Bharat Ratna for Major Dhyan Chand on his Death Anniversary

As India in general and the hockey fraternity, in particular, remembered one of the world’s best hockey players, Dhyan Chand, on his 41st death anniversary, several voices reiterated their demand of conferring Bharat Ratna on the legend.

Former Hockey Captain and chairman of the Hockey Promotion Council Odisha Dilip Tirkey led the campaign.

“Dhyan Chand ji is the greatest icon of the 21st century. The world recognized India’s sports talent because of his hockey skills. So, it would be fitting to confer the award on the legend,” said Tirkey.

Sand artist of international repute Sudarsan Pattnaik, who is known for initiating campaigns also appealed for Bharat Ratna to be conferred upon Dhyan Chand.

“Dhyan Chand’s achievements are beyond Bharat Ratna. But, it would be apt to address him with the tag. His unmatched contribution to Indian hockey is worthy enough to accord him with the honour,” he said.

Sports administrator Ashok Mohanty, who was present at a small gathering of hockey fans remembered meeting the icon.

“We were playing at Cuttack when we spotted Dhyan Chand ji. We went to him, touched his feet and got his blessings. The whole team had heard about his antics and we asked him whether he was actually a magician as everyone says. I remember Dhyan Chand Ji smiling at this and humbly saying he was no magician but rather it was hard work that earned him the tag of magician,” Mohanty recalled adding that the legend was a man of few words.

Odisha, which has earned the tag of Sports Capital of the country has been actively promoting hockey. Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had led a campaign to officially name hockey as the ‘National Game of India.’ In the coming days, the hockey fraternity is expected to hold public campaigns on conferring Bharat Ratna on Dhyan Chand.
