Telecom Sector Starts Post-Amphan Restoration Work

Department of Telecommunication (DoT) Secretary Anshu Prakash held a meeting with operators and infrastructure providers to review the status of telecom connectivity and ensure quick restoration of services in the Amphan-hit areas. All the telcos, infrastructure providers, representatives from West Bengal Telecom Circle, Eastern Telecom Region, CGMT Odisha, TAIPA and COAI attended the meeting under the chairmanship of Prakash.

In a media briefing in New Delhi, a statement by Tower & Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) said that the meeting was conducted to list out all the affected places where damage has been done to towers, optical fibre cables and to understand how much of those can be repaired in the next 24 hours. Secretary Prakash has asked both Airtel and Vodafone Idea to get 1,000 sites working in the next 24 hours.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik conducted an aerial survey over the areas affected by cyclone Amphan to see the aftermath of the cyclone. Post the survey, Patnaik directed the officials to take relief and rehabilitation measures on a war-footing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to visit West Bengal and Odisha today to review the situation and hold meetings with officials of both state governments.

The cyclone made landfall on Wednesday with gusting winds of up to 185 km and waves about 15 feet tall.
