OHRC slaps ₹4 lakh Compensation Payment against NESCO Utility

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has ordered a compensatory sum worth ₹4 lakh be paid to the next of kin of Ananda Sethi, a former resident of Kalahandia village in Bhadrak district, in an unfortunate electrocution case that resulted in the death of the victim. The case dates back to 2016.

The rights panel passed the order after hearing two petitions on the electrocution case. The two petitions were filed by Babula Sethi, son of the deceased, and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy who had filed a case at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The NHRC had then subsequently transferred the case to the OHRC. The OHRC in its order noted that as the subject matter was the same for both the cases filed, the order being released would be a common order for both the pleas.

The commission has asked for a compliance report from NESCO within three months from the date of receipt of the order. If the company fails in clearing the said amount within the stipulated time, it will have to pay an interest of nine percent per month on the compensation amount from the date of receipt of the order.

The OHRC, while making its judgement, noted that there were significant chances of insider involvement (that of NESCO) resulting in the unfortunate tragedy.
