Odisha Government To Ensure Potable Water Supply

The Odisha government will expedite the implementation of the National Water Quality Sub-Mission of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, as part of measures to ensure safe drinking water. Specific habitations that have been identified, and are affected by quality water problems, will get potable water.

Earlier, the ministry had asked the state to present a status report of such habitations, particularly those where the water contains arsenic or fluoride, and prepare an action plan to implement potable drinking water projects in those areas.

“In your state, groundwater in many rural habitations is affected by water quality issues and its consumption may cause health issues. To enable access of people to potable water in such habitations, the National Water Quality Sub-Mission was launched… You will agree that providing potable drinking water to people in such quality affected areas, it is being requested to take steps to implement the sub-mission on a priority basis”, read the letter from the ministry.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in September had directed the states to relook into the existing plan of action to complete the projects to provide safe drinking water and reduce timelines to cover all affected habitations.

This expedition in the implementation pro cess is being readied as a survey conducted by the ministry itself had found that in over half of the thirty districts of the state, drinking water was contaminated with either fluoride or iron.
