IMD Allays Cyclone Scare For Odisha

The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) has clarified that there exist no chances of a cyclone hitting the Odisha coast anytime over the next few days, and said that a low-pressure region brewing over the South Andaman Sea will not have any impact over the weather in the state.

The IMD bulletin also noted that the low-pressure area was likely to meander the South Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal for the next four days without any further intensification.

However, several districts of Odisha, including Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Cuttack, and Bhadrak are likely to witness heavy downpour and strong surface winds of upto fifty kilometres per hour over the next two days. Light to moderate rain is also predicted for most parts of the state, till May 10.

So far, the state has witnessed intermittent thundershowers and light rainfall. “Though one or two places in several districts of the state will get rainfall and thundershowers, these are due to Norwesters and not due to low pressure of cyclonic circulation. This is a common phenomenon in summer,” said H.R. Rahman, director of IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre.
