Twitter Launches Special Election-Time Emoji In Odia

Popular microblogging platform Twitter has decided to add a special Lok Sabha poll emoji ahead of the elections in a bid to promote healthy discussions on the platform and to encourage people to go out and vote.

The emoji features an image of the Parliament of India and will be made available in twelve languages – Hindi, English, Bengali/Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Twitterati will have access to this poll-special emoji pack till 31st May 2019.

The emoji will be automatically used with the usage of certain hashtags including #LokSabhaElections2019














To increase vigilance and voter participation, the Election Commission of India joined the Twitter platform on Friday, 22nd March. It launched the SVEEP Programme – the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation, aimed at voter awareness.

All over the world, Twitter and other influential social media platforms have had a profound influence on shaping polls, as they allow for an easy medium to gauge voter perception and receptivity.

In a statement, Mahima Kaul, Director (Public Policy and Government), Twitter India, said, “India is the world’s largest democracy, and the upcoming election is a key priority for us at Twitter. Over the past several months, we’ve taken significant steps to safeguard the integrity of conversations and enhance the health of our platform. We are honoured to onboard the Election Commission handle to encourage voter education”. The group also welcomed the ECI’s decision to join Twitter amidst the poll season.
