Odisha Welcomes Houseboat Tourism Investments

Odisha’s Department of Tourism recently concluded a three-day familiarisation trip to the Bhitarkanika National Park and Chilika Lake, in an outreach effort planned to woo luxury houseboat owners and water sports operators to invest in the state’s tourism industry.

With an aim to diversify the tourism industry in the state, the three-day orientation was intended to explore the potential of the various water bodies and wetlands that dot its landscape, apart from the 482-km long coastline that is an attraction domestically.

A total of 18 firms comprising of 26 participants from across six states including Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal took part in the FAM trip, apart from Odisha themselves. Bhitarkanika’s mangrove swamps were a key part of the visit, and have earned the sobriquet ‘India’s Amazon’ amongst enthusiasts. The tour to Chilika lake comprised of visits to Rambha and Satapada sites, followed by Tampara lake.

An interactive session was held with the participants of the FAM trip, during which key inputs were shared with the Tourism Department to ensure the success of the niche segments, security concerns, experience packaging, and other issues. The meet was fairly successful as there was eagerness and excitement amongst the delegates to start operations.

“The government has very aggressively promoted water sports and recreation tourism in recent times. We are laying special policy focus on niche tourism segments such as houseboat tourism, which seamlessly mingles with ecotourism and water recreation,” said the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha in his address and highlighted that Odisha always had a “habit of creating benchmarks” and “workable models” for sustainable ventures.Forwarded message:
