Odisha has always served as a winter host to numerous species of birds that migrate from various parts of the world. Similarly, this year has seen some of the most exotic bird species visiting the various ecological hotspots throughout the state.
Continuing with the annual practice, the 1st phase of the bird census kicked off on Thursday at the iconic Nadankanan Zoological Park and Similipal National Park in an aim to count the total number of birds that visit Odisha this winter. The activity will continue through the week at other hotspots including Chilika lagoon and Bhitarkanika National Park.
The census team includes experts from the Bombay Natural History Society, as confirmed by chief conservator of forest (wildlife division) Sandeep Tripathy.
“We have engaged nearly 1,000 forest and wildlife officials and experts for the purpose. The officials have fanned out at various spots to count birds using the direct sighting method. To ensure that the process remains error-free, the teams are carrying enumeration guidebooks to identify birds.” Tripathy added.
The enumeration team is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as binoculars, two-way radio sets, GPS scale etc. On Thursday, the team began carrying out the headcount of birds at 6 am and continued till 11 am. To ensure smooth flow of operations, the forest department has imposed temporary restrictions on tourists during the census period.
The census report is slated to release on January 10, an official confirmed.
