Delay In Land Acquisition Hindering Railway Projects In Odisha

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has written a letter addressed to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, urging him to solve the land acquisition problems of pending railway projects in Odisha. The letter also stressed on fixing the issues of non-availability of land, forest clearances and included a recommendation for the concerned officials to take appropriate action.

For completion of the Khurda Road-Balangir line, over 4,000 acres of private, government and forest land is to be acquired and handed over to the Railways for completion. This line would then connect the coastal region with the western district of the State making western Odisha more accessible. Similarly, in the case of Talcher-Bimlagarh project, 1,600 acres remain to be acquired.

Acknowledging land acquisition as the main reason for the delay in Odisha, Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav asserted that the Railways and the Odisha government are working together to sort these issues and a solution will be struck soon.

“Last year, the allocated fund for the projects of the state has not been fully utilised due to the land acquisition problem. But this year, more funds than a previous year have been allocated expecting land acquisition problems will be sorted out,” Yadav said.
