Odisha Orders Fresh Stocks; Establishes More Testing Centres

Preparations to tackle the coronavirus is in full swing as the state government has placed a fresh order for medical equipment and is readying more testing centres across the state.

The Odisha State Medical Corporation Ltd (OSMCL) has recently placed an order for procurement of about 15 lakh personal protection equipment (PPE), 2.2 crore triple-layer masks, 7.5 lakh N95 masks, and 1.7 crore nose clip adaptable masks.

On 9th April, the corporation had received 15 ventilators, 20,000 triple-layer masks, and 4,000 test kits. All the supplies were airlifted from Mumbai. Further, the corporation will acquire the rest of the consignments in installment over the next two months.

The Odisha government has already built the largest COVID-19 hospital in the country and has a stock of 69,886 N95 masks, 36,386 PPEs which includes hoods, triple-layered face masks, and shoe covers, and 3,16,069 bottles of hand sanitizers. Placed at various government hospitals, the state also has 299 ICU ventilators and 1,004 oxygen concentrators.

OSMCL Managing Director Yamini Sarangi said, “Already 27,000 N95 masks, 11 lakh triple-layer masks, 5,500 PPEs have been utilized in the last two months. The current stock of all essential drugs and surgical is sufficient to meet the consumption requirement for five months. Additional stock for four more months is expected to be supplied by the end of next month.”

In the meantime, Naba Kishore Das, the State Health and Family Welfare Minister, has urged Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, to suspend customs duty and GST from all medical tools like masks, sanitizers, ventilators, testing kits, and PPEs.

Odisha is also taking strides in enhancing testing capacities as COVID-19 tests will begin at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur from 12th April, VIMSAR, Burla from 15th April and IGH, Rourkela from 17th April.
