Corona Update: Another Odisha MLA Tests Positive

BJD MLA Prasant Behera has become the second legislator in Odisha to test positive for Corona. The MLA from the ruling party, hailing from Salipur in Cuttack district, has been admitted to a COVID hospital.

As per reports, the contraction to the virus could have occurred through contact with Sukanta Kumar Nayak, BJP’s Nilgiri MLA, who tested positive on Monday. Nayak has been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Balasore.

Behera’s security person and his driver have also contracted the virus, an official said.

Contact tracing has been started by the local administration as Behera has attended various events recently. In light of two legislators contracting the virus, Congress MLA Sura Routray has demanded a set of guidelines to be in place for scheduled events and meetings.

The state assembly speaker S N Patro had suspended all meetings of various committees in the state assembly after the MLA from Nilgiri was found to be infected with Covid-19.

Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had asked legislators to keep in touch with people adhering to the safety protocols and use technology wherever possible.

Currently, the total number of corona cases in Odisha stands at 10,624, with 527 new infections in the last 24 hours. There are 3,860 active cases, while 6,703 patients have recovered. A total of 48 persons have lost their lives due to the disease.

Meanwhile, reports are emerging around a super-spreader in Rourkela who has managed to infect 95 persons. The Sundergarh district has a total of 471 positive cases out of which 285 are active.
