50% of Residents in Malkangiri develop Antibodies against COVID-19

The sero survey results from Malkangiri town indicate 50 percent of the population has developed antibodies against COVID-19.

“As per a sero survey jointly conducted by the Malkangiri district administration and Regional Medical Research Center (RMRC), as many as 50% population have developed antibodies against COVID-19,” said Collector Manish Agarwal.

A total of 1613 samples from 19 wards under the Malkangiri Municipality area were collected for serological surveillance. Around 595 out of the total 1613 samples were of COVID warriors.

Agarwal warned against complacency during these times as a major part of the town remains susceptible to the disease. He especially urged people in the rural areas to follow protocol and prevent the virus from spreading in the community.

“The sero survey has also been conducted in rural areas of the district. Samples have been collected from various age groups in 42 villages. The report will be revealed very soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the COVID testing rate in Odisha has been on a constant decline since August. The daily testing rate in October thus far is around 41,000 as against a high of 68,906 tests recorded on August 22.

Experts have warned against such lapses as it may lead to a spurt in the infection rate. “We are now entering a very crucial phase. Kerala witnessed a resurgence of infection after the Onam festival. European countries also are battling a fierce second wave. If the Government shows that the infection is slowing down, people will relax and will lower their guard. With this strategy, Odisha is in danger of a serious comeback by the virus,” said microbiologist Dr Tribhuban Mohan Mohapatra.

Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently urged people to strictly follow all guidelines during the festive season. He directed the officials to remain alert and ensure all safety norms are implemented.
