The National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7, to commemorate the Swadeshi movement which was launched on this day in 1905. As the nation celebrated the day, social media went abuzz with actors, politicians and celebrities sharing their photographs dressed in different handlooms of India.

Time and again, Smriti Irani, Union Minister of Textiles has shown her allegiance to India’s weaves. She, in fact, has spearheaded the whole campaign on social media and had also initiated a similar ‘I Wear Handloom’ campaign in 2016 which had gone viral.

India’s ‘desi’ girl Priyanka Chopra might have ‘Videshi’ projects in hand, but she is surely attached to her roots. On National Handloom Day, she shared a photograph wearing a lemon green saree and appealed to the people to lend their support to the weavers and artisans of the textile industry.

The mother-daughter duo is not only fashionable and how. Both shared their photograph wearing exclusive handloom sarees, designed by Masaba herself. Masaba’s designs, which is a craze among the younger Bollywood stars, often feature handlooms.

The former beauty queen also wore a handloom saree and wrote, “Proud of this rich heritage of India and of our weavers who have kept our traditions alive. There is nothing like a handloom saree.”
