Odisha’s Ministers write to HRD urging Cancellation of UG & PG Exam

BJD spokesperson Amar Patnaik has written to Ramesh Pokhriyal, Union Minister of Human Resources Development (HRD), requesting cancellation of the final semesters of UG & PG exam.

The letter was a result of requests made by several students and parents expressing concerns about the Covid-19 situation. In the letter, he addressed the following issues:

  • Patnaik stated that the Odisha government had cancelled pending examinations of UG and PG final semesters for the current session. “But the government of India and UGC have issued revised guidelines mandating the state government and universities to conduct the UG and PG final term examinations despite the threat that it could pose for the health of students and parents,” he expressed.
  • The minister mentioned that during exams, it is not possible to maintain social distancing. This leads to a high probability of contamination as the examinations would be held in closed classrooms for 2-3 hours.

“I request you to direct the UGC to withdraw the circular immediately,” Patnaik concluded.

“As I have been approached by several students & parents expressing their concern, I have written to the hon’ble @HRDMinistry Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank Ji @DrRPNishank, on reconsideration of the UGC guideline & not to conduct the final term semesters of UG & PG exams, looking at the alarming COVID 19 situation. Have also highlighted about the decision taken by our Odisha govt on the same by cancelling all those pending exams. Sincerely hope this matter is taken into consideration,” read a tweet by Patnaik’s.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo had also written to MHRD urging the cancellation of UG and OPG semester examination. In his letter, he pointed at the lack of desktop, laptop, and decent smartphone availability. Sahoo’s letter is a follow up as no reply was received on a similar letter sent on July 9.
