Odisha Board Likely to Reduce School Syllabus

Samir Ranjan Das, the minister of Odisha School and Mass Education, has stated that the academic syllabus of state education boards might be reduced. This statement was made after the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) decision of reduction in the syllabus for Class 9 to 12 by up to 30% for the 2020-21 academic session.

These decisions have come in the wake of the hindering circumstances caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. However, there hasn’t been any announcement of a concrete decision made by the government of Odisha in this regard, claimed Das.

Speaking to the media, Das expressed his opinion about the state government following CBSE’s move and making decisions in the interest of students.

“Since everything remains hypothetical now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is too early to say anything regarding reduction in the school curriculum. Since schools are closed for long, the state Government obviously considers the CBSE’s decision. The decision on the opening of schools will be taken keeping in mind the Covid-19 situation in Odisha after August 31. Syllabus might be curtailed by more than 30% if the situation demands. However, the volume of reduction will be determined only after the schools reopen,” Das said.

Following CBSE’s Footsteps

On Tuesday, CBSE declared that it has reduced the academic syllabus for classes 9 to 12 by almost a third. This would help make up for the loss due to the COVID-enforced shutdown. The Union human resource development (HRD) ministry urged the board to adjust the curriculum. The CBSE has further instructed schools to pursue alternative calendars planned by the NCERT.

Notably, the board is facing criticism from certain media houses and opposition ministers as topics such as secularism, citizenship, and federalism have been excluded.

“Each of the topics that have been wrongly mentioned in media as deleted have been covered under Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT which is already in force for all the affiliated schools of the Board,” said the board in its defence.
