Mihir Das, one of the stalwarts of the Odisha film industry, passed away today while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack. He was sixty-three years of age and was suffering from a multitude of kidney-related diseases for the past few years. Around a month ago, he was admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack where he was on ventilator support and his dialysis was going on.
Born in Mayurbhanj district on February 11, 1959, Mihir made his debut in an art film, ‘School Master’. Thereafter, he made his commercial debut with ‘Mathura Bijay’ in 1979. The veteran actor bagged the best actor award from the State government for his powerful performance in ‘Laxmi Pratima’, released in 1998, and ‘Pheria Mo Suna Bhauni’, released in 2005. For the film ‘Mu Tate Love Karuchhi’, released in 2007, he won the ‘best comedian’ award. Moreover, people will never forget his stellar performance in ‘Pua Mora Bholashankara’.
He hosted the super-hit reality show ‘Ashara Aloka’ on OTV and helped reconcile many couples and their families battling domestic disputes. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Tarang Cine Productions in 2021
National Vice President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Baijayant Panda, condoled his death. Taking to Twitter, Panda wrote, “I am crestfallen hearing the news. It is an end of an era. Mihir Das was a household name in Odisha and he was known for his sharp acting skills. I extend my deepest sympathies for the grieving family.”
Noted educationalist, philanthropist and now legislator Achyuta Samanta also expressed his grief on Twitter. “Saddened by the passing away of veteran Odia actor Shri Mihir Das – one of the most talented actors from Odisha. He was a good man with a good soul. Praying for his departed soul to rest in peace. Condolences to family, friends and legion of fans,” read his tweet.
