The demolition of the mutts at Puri has led to widespread criticism, and as a compensation for the inconvenience caused, the Odisha government has announced a rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) package for affected individuals as well as institutions. The package is estimated to run into several hundred crore rupees.

The initiative includes a relocation allowance of Rs 50,000 per family towards expenses of transportation and other immediate arrangements apart from the Rs 10,000 per month assistance from the date of acquisition of the property till handing over of a residential unit/resettlement plot to the displaced family. The family also has a choice to opt for one-time assistance of Rs 30 lakh.

Families may also opt for a 520 square feet built-up area in a colony within 1.5 km of the temple complex or, a resettlement plot of 40×25 ft within two km of the temple. Shop owners have been allotted a relocation allowance of Rs 50,000 per unit for transportation and other heads.

Influential individuals including former BJD MP Tathagata Satpathy and the Puri Shankaracharya have raised concerns over this move. A majority of people have raised questions on why the mutts were not preserved.
