‘One may fall in love anytime and with anyone’: Odisha’s Dutee Chand on same-sex relationship

In an online interaction with US Consul General Joel Reifman, Odisha’s star athlete Dutee Chand opened up about same-sex relationship. “One may fall in love anytime and with anyone. One does not decide that based on caste, religion or gender,” she said.

As the pride month celebrations inched towards an end, Chand called for people in same-sex relationships to be bold. The sprinter believes that one should not bother about an outsider’s view, especially when it comes to relationships.

“My partner supported me every time and I have chosen her for my life. People may look at us differently or call us by any name like gay, lesbian, etc. That does not matter so far as we get to spend our lives with each other,” said Chand.

“For all who are in love but afraid of the world, you must show courage because the world has always taken time to accept all good things. So please do not be afraid because it is your life and your happiness,” she added.

At 24, Dutee Chand is taking the world by storm with her extraordinary performances in the 100m and 200m categories. Shattering records every time she takes to the field, the Odia girl is one of India’s brightest sporting talents.

Chand has had a life full of struggles, especially since her family does not accept her being in a same-sex relationship. Even with all the trouble in her family life, she continues to perform exceptionally well. Her motto has always been to let her performances do the talking.

The young athlete became India’s first sprinter to win gold at the Universiade, clocking 11.32 seconds in the 100m category. Chand also holds a national record in women’s 100m. Notably, she is India’s first athlete top openly come out as a member of the LGBTQ community.
