Odisha Government to Promote Road Trips to Revive Tourism post-COVID

The Odisha Tourism department has chalked out a plan to attract tourists to the state. With air and train services being disrupted due to COVID, the state tourism department is planning to push the concept of road trips in Odisha. The campaign called ‘Road Trip To and Through Odisha’ will be promoted if the situation improves later this year.

To lift the tourism sector, road trips could act as a major catalyst. As per state tourism secretary, Vishal Dev, the department is targeting neighbouring states such as West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh, such that tourists from Ranchi, Kolkata, Raipur, Visakhapatnam, Jamshedpur, and Bilaspur, venture out for road trips to Odisha. There will also be some attractive packages for these travellers.

As travel is currently restricted inter-state borders sealed, the state is planning to implement the plan in October, hoping the situation would be better by then.

“Assuming that the COVID situation improves in the next few weeks, the flights and trains to Odisha may resume. But tourists may hesitate to take air and rail travel anytime soon. So we conceptualized the road trip to capture the domestic tourist market of our neighbouring states,” said Dev.

As for the incentives, the tourism department of Odisha will be arranging accommodation and sightseeing for those travelling by road to and through Odisha. Currently, the hotels that are operating in the state are doing so in a restricted manner. There is also a plan to do virtual roadshows by roping in tour operators from neighbouring states.
