Odisha’s SUM hospital in collaboration with Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad has successfully carried out the state’s first liver transplant. The transplant was done on a 55-year-old teacher as his 19-year-old son donated the organ.
The patient Jayanta Biswal, is a native of Kantiatikar village under the Oupada block in Balasore district. He works as a primary school teacher at Pandesara in Surat city of Gujarat. His liver ailment was existent since 2016.
“Biswal had been suffering from cryptogenic cirrhosis of the liver and it was decided to conduct the transplant to save his life. Cirrhosis of the liver is the end-stage liver disease with an invariably progressive course. We finally performed the transplant on Thursday between 3 pm and midnight”, said Manoj Kumar Sahu, head of the gastroenterology department of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, SOA deemed to be university.
Currently, both the donor and acceptor are kept under observation in the ICU.
Gastrointestinal surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and paramedics from SUM were sent to Yashoda for training. The transplant took place based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Yashoda hospitals and SUM hospitals, one and a half years ago.
Pusparaj Samantasinhar, medical superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, informed that the first procedure of the transplant was done for free. Surgeries like this cost between Rs. 20 to 25 lakh in other hospitals but it can be done at Rs. 10 lakh in SUM hospital.
“They are doing fine after nine-hour-long marathon surgery on them. The receiver will be in ICU for five to seven days before shifting him to the ward. But the donor will be discharged after six days. We took the right lobe of the liver from Jayanta’s son Saumya Ranjan, a bachelor of commerce student, and transplanted it in the receiver’s body. Saumya’s liver will regenerate itself within three months,” said Sahu.
“Most of the hospitals in and outside Odisha advised me for liver transplantation of my husband. I could not muster the courage for the transplantation because they were asking me between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh for this. I requested the SUM Hospital for help. They took initiative and performed the transplant for free”, said Jayanta’s wife Anita.
The 40 member team which was involved in the surgery was led by gastroenterologists Manoj Kumar Sahu and Premananda Patnaik of SUM hospital. They were also assisted by P Balachandran Menon, chief Liver transplant surgeon from Yashoda along-with G V Prem Kumar, director of Anaesthesia and Intensive care.
