ECoR to receive Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Shield for all-round performance

The East Coast Railways (ECoR) has been officially selected to receive the prestigious Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Best Zonal Railway Shield-2020 for excellent all-round performance among all zones under the aegis of the Indian Railways. This marks the third time that the ECoR has been bestowed with the honour.

“This is a very prestigious honour for any zonal railway. Earlier, ECoR had bagged this shield for all-round performance in 2008-09 and 2015-16. Union railway minister Piyush Goyal will handover this shield to ECoR during Railway National Award Function,” said official sources.

The shield, instituted in the memory of Late Shri Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant – a freedom fighter and former Union Minister – is presented every year to a Zonal Railway whose performance is adjudicated the best among all railway zones across India. At present, the Indian Railways has seventeen zones, which are further subdivided for administrative purposes.

The selection criteria requires robust performance across a varied set of parameters and metrics, each of which is scrutinised in detail. The competent authority assesses loading revenue and earnings, goods traffic, punctuality of trains, passenger traffic, consequential train accidents per million train kilometers, capacity utilisation of repair workshop, coach performance, energy consumption, utilisation of locomotive power and railway stock, operating ratio, economy in manpower, working of signal/telecom equipment, progress of track renewal, stock utilisation, performance of track machine, ticket checking, timely completion of major works and scrap disposal.
