Central Bus Code To Be Implemented

The Odisha government has decided to implement the Centre’s Bus Body code from April 1 to ensure the safety of the passengers. The code advocates and mandates basic standards and requirements on the layout, dimensions, safety, strength, and other technical requirements for buses.

On July 19, 2017, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had mandated compliance with the bus body code. The standard design of the body in the code’s automotive industry standards (AIS-052) and AIS-119 (sleeper body) has been prepared by an expert committee, after considering safety features, seating comfort, provision for sleeper seats, stability and strength of the body.

“The body can be manufactured by the original equipment manufacturer and accredited bus body builders approved by the testing agencies of the Centre like the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The new code applies to buses with a capacity of thirteen passengers or more, excluding the driver”, said an official statement from the State Transport Authority (STA).

Sanjay Kumar Behera, Regional Transport Officer (Bhubaneswar-II), said that buses that do not comply with the new safety norms AIS-052 and AIS-119 will not be registered from April 1, in a bid to improve road safety and overall experience of the passengers involved.
